The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has addressed the recent earth tremors in parts of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), attributing them to accumulated stress along geological faults. He reassured residents that these tremors pose a very low threat and are being closely monitored by the government.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Alake provided details regarding the tremors, which have primarily been felt around Mpape and Katampe. He emphasized that there is no cause for panic and assured the public that the situation is under continuous observation.
“This is to reassure everyone about the recent earth tremors in the Federal Capital Territory—there’s no need to panic as we have been closely monitoring the situation,” the statement read.
Alake noted that from September 13 to 16, the Monitoring Station at Katampe recorded several ground motions with increased intensity and frequency. He explained that the tremors, characterized as weak to light, have multiple epicentres, mainly in the Mpape and Katampe areas.
“I advise residents not to panic, as these tremors are low in intensity. We are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed. Our NGSA Seismic Stations are also being monitored in real-time for prompt alerts on any major events,” he stated.
