Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has been remanded in prison over allegations of defaming renowned legal icon and founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN.
Farotimi was arraigned on Monday before a Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti. He faces a 16-count charge for alleged defamatory statements made in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
The police prosecutor, Samson Osun, requested that Farotimi be detained in prison pending the conclusion of investigations, citing concerns about public security.
Dayo Akeredolu, counsel to the defendant, opposed the motion, urging the court to grant his client bail on self-recognizance, arguing that Farotimi poses no threat and remains innocent until proven guilty.
Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, however, ruled for Farotimi’s remand and adjourned the case to December 10 for further hearing.
