Following the tragic death of at least eighteen people in an accident at a police checkpoint in the Lokpanta area of Abia State, a protest broke out on Thursday morning.
According to reports, a truck driver lost control and crashed into an 18-seater commercial bus that was waiting for police clearance at a checkpoint along the Umuahia-Enugu axis of the Port Harcourt Enugu Highway, killing the driver and all of the passengers.
Residents demanded that the police officers on duty at the check point be brought back to the site, which sparked a protest.
They promised that the protest would not end until state governor Alex Otti paid a visit to the location.
By phone, Bananas Okereke, an eyewitness, said to The Nation that by 8:20 a.m., the bodies of the dead were still scattered around the area.
“Bus drivers and other motorists are blocking the road in protest, demanding that the police officers responsible for the accident be brought back to the scene,” the speaker stated.
“The bus driver’s coworkers and other drivers have blocked the route and are calling for justice for the victims. They promised to stay until Governor Alex Otti paid a visit.
