Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dickson announced his decision on Thursday while addressing a world press conference, explaining that his move was guided by personal conviction and concern over the current state of the PDP.

According to the senator, the party he once belonged to is currently facing deep internal challenges that have weakened its capacity to effectively play its role in Nigeria’s democratic system.

“I am a man of conviction. The PDP today is in the Intensive Care Unit,” Dickson said, describing the situation within the party as troubling and unsustainable.

The former governor stressed that Nigeria’s democracy must not drift toward a one-party state, noting that strong opposition parties are necessary for accountability, balance of power and healthy democratic competition.

Further details of his political plans and the reaction from the PDP leadership are expected in the coming days.
