The resigned Kano State Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Haruna Umar Doguwa, has clinched the chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, emerging victorious as the party elected a new set of state executive members to pilot its affairs.

Doguwa secured the top position during the party’s state congress held Tuesday night, following his strategic resignation from the commissioner role to contest the seat. His exit from the cabinet was formally accepted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, clearing the path for his participation in the internal electoral process.

The outcome of the congress has reshaped the power structure within the party in Kano. With Doguwa and other close allies of Governor Yusuf taking key positions in the new executive, the governor has tightened his grip on the party’s state machinery. At the same time, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, maintains influence through the emergence of Salisu Maje-Gwangwazo as Deputy Chairman.

Supporters of former National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, also secured strategic footholds within the 28-member executive committee, further reflecting the layered power dynamics within the party.

Other officials elected during the exercise include Prof. Yusuf Sabo-Bichi as State Secretary and Fatima Dala as State Woman Leader. The newly constituted executive is expected to strengthen internal cohesion and reposition the party ahead of future political contests across Kano’s 44 local government areas.

Party stakeholders described the congress as peaceful and transparent, expressing confidence that the new leadership would consolidate existing structures and foster unity among members.

In his acceptance speech, Doguwa pledged to drive inclusiveness, intensify grassroots mobilization, and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to prepare the party for upcoming political engagements in the state.
