Edin Terzic, the coach of Borussia Dortmund, announced his resignation on Thursday following the team’s runner-up finish in the Champions League.
Terzic expressed his desire for Dortmund to enter a “new era” with a fresh coach, although no immediate successor was named. Reports in German media suggested that his assistant, Nuri Sahin, could take over the reins.
His final game in charge was Dortmund’s 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium on June 1. In a statement released by the club, Terzic explained his decision, stating, “After 10 years at BVB, I believe it’s time for a new face on the touchline.”
While admitting the difficulty of his decision, Terzic remained steadfast in his resolve. Despite being a lifelong Dortmund fan and seemingly in his dream job, the team’s unexpected journey to the Champions League final contrasted with their underwhelming performances in the German league.
Terzic had tasted success as an interim coach, winning the German Cup in 2021 and finishing as Bundesliga runner-up to Bayern Munich in 2023. However, this season saw Dortmund slump to fifth place in the Bundesliga, their lowest finish in nine years, and an early exit from the German Cup.
Reflecting on Terzic’s departure, sporting director Sebastian Kehl expressed gratitude for their shared achievements and wished him well for the future. Terzic’s legacy at Dortmund is marked by significant accomplishments, and his departure marks the end of an era for the club.
