A diesel-laden tanker driver was on Friday burnt to death during an explosion at Atoyo, outbound Ijebu-Ode on the Ijebu-Ode-Ogbere Expressway in Ogun State.

The Spokesperson for the Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.

Akinbiyi explained that the accident occurred at 10:45 am and was caused by reckless driving by the tanker driver who was alone in the truck.

He said, “According to an eyewitness, it was learnt that the driver of the Deisel-laden tanker was driving recklessly when it suddenly lost control and fell on it’s side with its content spilling on the road before it exploded.

“The driver, according to the eyewitness was the only occupant in the vehicle when the unfortunate incident happened and was burnt to ashes before rescue efforts could reach him.

“The maker and registration number of the tanker could not be ascertained due to the level of explosion.”

Akinbiyi appealed to articulated vehicle drivers, especially tanker drivers to avoid reckless driving, speeding, and drunk driving.

He advised them to have adequate rest before embarking on any journey in order to avoid accidents.
