LAGOS – In a high-stakes security operation, operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday morning, sealing off the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk of the house.
By 10 a.m., heavily armed security personnel had locked down the Alausa premises, frisking every passerby and tightening access to the legislative complex.
Despite the siege, Meranda arrived defiantly with her convoy at 11:15 a.m.
The crackdown follows a legal battle by ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who is challenging his removal in court. Obasa, who held the position for a decade, was dismissed in absentia on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted him out.
His lawsuit before the Ikeja High Court demands immediate reinstatement, fueling tensions within Lagos’ political circles. The crisis has also divided the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, as factions clash over Obasa’s fate.
As the standoff unfolds, all eyes remain on the Assembly for the next twist in this power struggle.
