The head coach and players of Dutch club AZ Alkmaar denounced the actions of some members of their own fan base who attacked West Ham United players as they celebrated their victory in the Europa Conference League semifinal on Thursday.
At the AZ Stadium, home supporters burst past a gate and attacked the West Ham team that was situated in a designated area behind their own club’s dugout.
West Ham players, including captain Declan Rice, tried to break up the fight when it started, and several of them ran to the help of family members.
It irritates me and has no place in our stadium. Coach Pascal Jansen, whose team fell 1-0 on Thursday as West Ham won 3-1 overall to advance to the final against Fiorentina in Prague on June 7, stated, “I’d rather not to be in a stadium.
“I feel guilty. Even on a night when you lose, you need to keep your emotions under control.
Several AZ players, including defender Pantelis Hatzidiakos, spoke out against the violence in post-game interviews.
“I find what happened to be sad. There was my family. My partner stated they were shaking, and I’ve been in contact with them,” he told Dutch television.
“I hardly even refer to them as supporters. If you have such goals, simply stay at home.
It was such a lovely evening and a wonderful environment; I thoroughly liked it. I find what transpired after that to be really unfortunate and terrible.
In order to stop additional conflict, police and stewards were on the site right once. After 10 minutes, peace was restored.
Similar behavior occurred last week in London when West Ham supporters confronted AZ supporters, including members of the coach Jansen family, who had been celebrating the goal scored by the Dutch team in the first half of the first leg.
