The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly restated that Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate, must obtain security clearance before entering Edo State. This position was reaffirmed by the state APC chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, who supported Governor Monday Okpebholo’s earlier caution concerning Obi’s visits to the state.
Tenebe cited security concerns stemming from Obi’s previous entrance, during which three people lost their lives, as justification for this stance. He highlighted that the party’s view aligns with the governor’s warning, emphasizing the local public sentiment and the potential risks associated with Obi’s unsanctioned visits.
Speaking shortly after the APC announced Joseph Ikpea and Omosede Igbinedion as candidates for Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency respectively, Tenebe also pledged vigorous campaigning ahead of the 2024 governorship election. The APC intends to strongly affirm it was the legitimate winner.
Details of the primaries revealed that Ikpea emerged as the consensus senatorial candidate with full delegate support, while Igbinedion was returned unopposed after other aspirants withdrew. These developments underscore the APC’s readiness to consolidate its political position in Edo State amid the unfolding electoral landscape.
