In the wake of the Edo State governorship election, where Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Governor Godwin Obaseki has called for calm among residents.
In an online broadcast, Obaseki acknowledged that the election results have left many Edo citizens feeling disheartened and powerless against the institutions meant to safeguard their rights. He emphasized the importance of democracy, which empowers the people to select their leaders, and lamented that this power seems to have been undermined.
“The recent election has understandably left many feeling sad and aggrieved,” he stated. “However, I urge all Edo citizens to remain peaceful and refrain from violence or property destruction, despite the challenges we face.”
Obaseki’s appeal comes as he encourages unity and restraint in response to the election outcome, stressing that maintaining calm is crucial for the state’s progress.
