The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has reprimanded MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited for allegedly creating new customer accounts without installing meters, a practice the Commission says clearly violates its regulations.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commission revealed that it had received multiple complaints from customers who claimed MainPower opened new accounts in their names but failed to provide the required meters—forcing them to pay additional estimated bills.
Citing Section 35(1)(f) of the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023 and its Customer Service Standard and Protection Regulations (CSSPR) 2024, the EERC stressed that no customer should be connected to the grid without a properly installed meter and all accessories specified in the Metering Code. It emphasized that providing meters and related materials remains the sole responsibility of the service provider.
The Commission said it has formally ordered MainPower to immediately halt the creation of new accounts for existing customers without metering.
EERC also urged affected customers to report violations via info@eerc.en.gov.ng or call 09122642755 for prompt enforcement action.
The regulator further advised unmetered customers to take advantage of the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Scheme, which enables customers to fund their meters upfront with guaranteed refunds under approved conditions.
“Any new account created without a corresponding meter is a clear breach of regulatory provisions,” the statement added.
