The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Mrs. Joy Enwa, the Accountant General of Delta State, as part of an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion in state funds. The funds are reportedly linked to the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
EFCC sources confirm that several other government officials have been questioned in relation to the case, including a former Director of Finance and Administration, as well as a senior official from the Government House.
The funds under scrutiny are said to include portions of the 13 percent derivation allocation intended for oil-producing states.
The EFCC’s probe also covers assets tied to the alleged mismanagement, including shares in UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Company and various investments in the oil sector.
In a statement, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed Mrs. Enwa’s detention, explaining that she was being questioned over her role in the ongoing investigation into financial mismanagement during the Okowa administration. “Some other government officials have also been interrogated,” he added.
Mrs. Enwa, who was appointed Accountant General in 2020 by Okowa, previously served as deputy Accountant General under Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan. This is not the first time she has faced scrutiny; in 2015, she was implicated in a separate N369 million fraud case involving other state officials and banking personnel.
When contacted for comment, Mrs. Enwa declined to speak on the matter, referring inquiries to the EFCC. “I am not the right source to confirm this story. Please contact the EFCC for clarification,” she said.
