Andrés Iniesta, the legendary midfielder who scored Spain’s World Cup-winning goal in 2010 and was instrumental in Barcelona’s tiki-taka success, announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday. The 40-year-old Iniesta concluded a remarkable 22-year career that included two European Championship titles and four Champions League trophies.
At an emotional ceremony in Barcelona, Iniesta expressed his feelings, stating, “I never expected that this day would come, I never imagined it. But all the tears from the last few days are tears of emotion, or pride; they are not tears of sadness. They are tears of this kid who had the dream of being a football player and who succeeded after a lot of hard work, effort, and sacrifice.”
Since departing Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta played for Vissel Kobe in Japan and most recently for Emirates in the UAE Pro League. He made his first-team debut with Barcelona in 2002, going on to make 674 appearances for the club.
Known for his exceptional ball control and playmaking ability, Iniesta was a key figure in a Barcelona midfield alongside Xavi Hernández and Sergio Busquets, contributing to a style of play that captivated fans worldwide. He won nine La Liga titles and six Copa del Rey trophies with the Catalan club.
On the international stage, Iniesta played a pivotal role in Spain’s dominance, winning the UEFA European Championship in 2008 and 2012, and the 2010 World Cup, where he scored the decisive goal in the final.
Iniesta was joined by family, Barcelona officials, and members of the current squad, including coach Hansi Flick, as he bid farewell to his illustrious career.
