Former Governor of old Anambra State and elder statesman, Senator Jim Nwobodo, has reaffirmed that Enugu State must remain under the control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating emphatically that Governor Peter Mbah will not defect to any other political party.

Nwobodo made the declaration during the celebration of Governor Mbah’s two-year anniversary in office held in Enugu on Thursday. He expressed confidence that the governor would seek re-election on the PDP platform in 2027, predicting a victorious return to office.

“Enugu State remains the only PDP-controlled state in the South East, which confirms the party’s stronghold here,” Nwobodo stated. “We will not abandon the PDP for anyone or any other party. Peter Mbah will contest for a second term under the PDP, and he will return as Governor in 2027.”

Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Enugu State has largely remained a PDP stronghold. However, the 2023 general elections saw the Labour Party make major gains in the state legislature, though the PDP managed to retain the governorship seat.

Following the elections, several lawmakers and political stakeholders who had initially aligned with the Labour Party have since returned to the PDP, including the party’s 2023 governorship candidate.

Adding weight to the governor’s prospects, billionaire businessman Prince Arthur Eze disclosed during the event that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had already given his endorsement for Mbah’s second-term bid.

In his own remarks, Governor Peter Mbah reflected on the challenges and responsibilities of governance, acknowledging the pressure that comes with decision-making in public office.

“I’m constantly thinking about how my decisions affect the lives of our people. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly,” Mbah said, stressing his commitment to delivering impactful leadership.

The anniversary celebration brought together top political figures, business leaders, and supporters of the Mbah administration, signaling a continued push by the PDP to consolidate power in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
