Manchester United has officially sacked manager Erik Ten Hag following a 1-2 defeat to West Ham in the Premier League, the club announced on Monday. This loss dropped United to 14th place in the standings, marking their fourth league defeat in just nine matches.
In an official statement, Manchester United confirmed, “Erik Ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. The Dutchman was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as interim head coach, supported by the existing coaching staff, while the search for a permanent replacement begins.
United’s struggles this season have been evident, following a disappointing conclusion to the 2023-24 campaign, where they finished eighth and missed out on European competition. With only three wins in their last 12 matches—including a 0-3 loss to arch-rivals Liverpool—Ten Hag’s position had been increasingly questioned.
Despite being retained after an internal review and receiving a one-year contract extension until June 2026 after a surprise FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May, Ten Hag failed to address the team’s ongoing issues.
Having joined United in May 2022, Ten Hag defended his record in recent weeks, highlighting the two trophies won during his tenure, including ending a six-year wait for silverware with a League Cup victory over Newcastle in 2023.
