Etihad Nigeria return reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector as the airline prepares to reconnect the country with its expanding global network.
Etihad Airways is expected to resume scheduled flights between Abu Dhabi and Nigeria in the first quarter of 2027 following discussions between Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and a delegation from the UAE-based carrier. The planned comeback coincides with a new codeshare agreement between Etihad Airways and Air Peace, Nigeria’s leading airline. The partnership will give Etihad passengers access to more than 20 destinations across Nigeria, West Africa and Central Africa, while Air Peace customers will enjoy seamless connections through Abu Dhabi to destinations across the Middle East, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America.
Etihad suspended its Abu Dhabi-Lagos route in November 2022 after diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates. The suspension followed visa restrictions on Nigerian travellers, trapped airline revenues caused by foreign exchange shortages and other bilateral concerns. The planned Etihad Nigeria return highlights renewed confidence in the Nigerian aviation market after government efforts to resolve outstanding airline funds and improve the operating environment.
The airline’s return is expected to increase competition, expand travel options and encourage better service delivery while creating more competitive fares for passengers. Improved international air links will also support trade, tourism and foreign direct investment by making Nigeria more accessible to businesses and investors worldwide.
The development also raises expectations for Nigerian airlines to strengthen fleet modernisation, improve customer service and build strategic partnerships to remain competitive. At the same time, government agencies, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), must continue improving safety standards, airport infrastructure and regulatory consistency. Sustaining these reforms will ensure the Etihad Nigeria return becomes more than the revival of a major route and instead marks another important step in the continued growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
