The European Union (EU), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and TAF Africa have called for stronger security measures to protect persons with disabilities during Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The stakeholders said disability-inclusive elections require specific security plans, staff training and emergency procedures to ensure eligible voters can participate safely and without fear.
They made the call at a technical engagement on disability-inclusive election security and protection protocols in Abuja. The Albino Foundation (TAF Africa) organised the event with funding from the European Union.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria Gautier Mignot said protection for voters with disabilities must cover every stage of the electoral process. These include voter registration, political campaigns, election day and the period after voting.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, described electoral inclusion as a democratic obligation rather than an act of charity. Represented by National Commissioner Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, he said every eligible citizen should be able to exercise the right to vote, regardless of disability or personal circumstances.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mignot Guttier, also urged the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen protections against intimidation, violence and discrimination targeting persons with disabilities during elections.
Guttier said disability-inclusive elections must feature in police operational plans, personnel training and deployment instructions ahead of the 2027 polls.
He stressed that democratic credibility depends not only on how elections are conducted but also on whether all eligible citizens can take part freely and safely.
“Democracy is not measured solely by the conduct of elections. It is also measured by whether every eligible citizen can participate freely, safely and meaningfully, without discrimination or fear,” he said.
The stakeholders’ call highlights the need for election officials and security agencies to consider the specific risks faced by voters with disabilities. Effective planning and protection measures could help remove barriers to participation and strengthen confidence in the electoral process.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections continue, disability-inclusive elections remain an important part of ensuring equal voting rights for all eligible Nigerians.
