Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has raised alarm over the growing trend of dollarisation in Nigeria, warning that even bribes are now exchanged in foreign currency.

Speaking on Sunday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Falana criticised government officials for promoting the use of the dollar instead of the naira.

“The president was announcing gifts to footballers in dollars, not naira. It has to stop. We must promote the naira, not the dollar,” he said.

The senior lawyer stressed that rejecting the naira remains a criminal offence and urged Nigerians to desist from paying school fees, property fees, and other transactions in foreign currency.
