In the Ole-Esu hamlet in the Omalla local government area of Kogi State, there has been one fatality as a result of fighting between farmers and herders.
According to a local, Abdullahi Ako, who told newsmen about the incident, other animals were also slaughtered in the clash.
He explained that on Saturday, when migratory herders were seen burning fields in the Ole-Esu hamlet, the conflict began.
“This past weekend, tensions between herders and residents of the Ole-Esu community erupted, leading to a crisis. We found out that one human and numerous livestock were slaughtered,” the man added.
“We have nothing against herders traveling through our territory, but they must respect our own sources of income. To witness something one has worked for being destroyed in such a way is heartbreaking.
“The herders should respect our source of food, income, and livelihood as we do theirs,” said Ebiloma Edime, a different local.
They consequently made an appeal to the government at all levels as well as the security services to assist them in preventing a purported planned retaliation strike.
While confirming the occurrence, SP William Aya of the state police stated, “The situation is already peaceful. Vigilantes and hunters are keeping close watch over the sites, as are police and other security organizations.
