The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has praised the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) for creating the Northern Security Trust Fund to address insecurity and support farming activities across Northern Nigeria. The association welcomed the decision by governors to contribute N1 billion monthly and establish a management board to oversee the fund.
AFAN National President Muhammad Magaji Gettado described the move as a strong sign of commitment towards tackling the region’s growing security challenges. He said the establishment of the Northern Security Trust Fund represents an important step towards rebuilding confidence among farmers and communities affected by violence.
The association also expressed confidence in the fund’s management board, describing its members as people with integrity and proven experience. AFAN said this would encourage transparent and responsible handling of the resources dedicated to improving regional security.
According to the group, restoring peace remains essential for reviving agricultural production in Northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings and other security threats have forced many farmers away from their fields. Gettado said the initiative could help farmers return to work, increase food output, reduce pressure on food prices and improve national food security.
He encouraged farmers, cooperative groups and AFAN members across Northern states to support the programme by cooperating with security agencies and sharing reliable information that could help prevent crime.
The association reaffirmed its willingness to work with governments and other stakeholders to build a safer environment for agriculture. AFAN said stronger partnerships and improved security would help Nigeria move closer to food self-sufficiency and sustainable agricultural growth.
How do you think improved security funding could change the future of farming in Northern Nigeria?
