On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari’s outgoing administration was defended by the minister of works and housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, over the ongoing clearance of multibillion naira contracts and foreign loans. Buhari, according to Fashola, can award contracts and loans up until the very last minute.

With only a few days left in his administration, Fashola argued that “this government must work until the very last day of its tenure” in response to those who advised the President to stop awarding new contracts.

He remarked, “Some people are still asking why they are borrowing with just a few days left before it expires; the answer is that there isn’t enough money and people need infrastructure.

“Some people are asking why we’re still giving out contracts with just a few days left, but they seem to have forgotten that the current administration’s term ends at midnight on May 28, 2023, and that’s when Bola Tinubu assumes power, which explains why we’re still at work.

They overlook the fact that the Nigerian people, through their representatives, passed a budget for us to carry out.

If you don’t like borrowing, the government will raise your taxes as a substitute because that is how deficits are paid in all political systems.

Fashola said, “We want good roads and we are complaining that Buhari’s administration is borrowing money, who is now going to give us money to execute all these projects.” Fashola was responding to a question on how some projects are being funded.

“I’m also here to let you know that, whether we are still in the office or not, we will be leaving sustainable development behind here.

“I signed the request for an advance payment guarantee two days ago, authorizing the delivery of the funds to the contractor.

“Contractors have started moving around to speak with those who will supply them with items to use for the construction now that we have completed all the requirements. Therefore, we are building this road from scratch.
