On December 18 2024, 68 officers from various police divisions across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) successfully completed a first phase specialized tactical training program at the Police Training Camp in Dei-Dei, Abuja.
The event which culminated in a significant moment for the officers who had undergone an intensive two-week training course designed to enhance their operational skills and readiness.
This initiative, which falls under the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IG), stress the importance of continual professional development for police officers across the nation.
In his address,”The essence of this retraining is not just about improving tactical skills,” CP Disu remarked, “but also about instilling values of discipline, integrity, and professionalism, which are the cornerstone of effective policing.” He further, the need for police officers to quickly adapt to emerging security situations, which is why retraining and skill enhancement are crucial.
The ceremony was marked by a display of various law enforcement drills, including riot control tactics, arms handling, and combat operations. Officers demonstrated their proficiency in dismantling and assembling firearms such as the AK47, while others displayed their skills in handling the General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG). The training also included simulated exercises on quick response drills, aimed at reinforcing the officers’ preparedness for any urgent situations.
Yahaya Yusuf, a senior officer and expert in weaponry, led a series of training sessions on weaponry, guiding the officers through the critical steps of proper gun handling and maintenance.
In a notable demonstration, CP Disu joined the officers on the firing range, actively participating in the exercises, further emphasizing the importance of hands-on practice in law enforcement training.
The Passing Out Parade was a spectacle of precision and professionalism, with officers executing complex drills and formations. The event was attended by senior police officials, dignitaries, and distinguished guests who commended the officers for their hard work and dedication.
The IG’s directive for periodic retraining and upskilling is part of the broader strategy to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of Nigeria’s police force. With the completion of this program, these 65 officers are now better equipped to serve their communities, armed with the latest tactical knowledge and operational expertise.
CP Disu concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to the IG for providing the necessary resources for the training, reiterating that the police force will continue to invest in the development of its personnel to meet the ever-changing demands of national security.
