The Federal Government has strengthened its push for sustainable energy access with the completion and commissioning of a 100-kilowatt-peak solar mini-grid in Damau, a rural community in Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The project was delivered through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) as part of ongoing efforts to drive socio-economic development in underserved communities across the country.

In a statement issued at the weekend, the REA disclosed that the solar mini-grid will provide reliable electricity to about 2,500 residents of Damau, boosting livelihoods, supporting small businesses, and improving access to basic services.

Speaking on the project, Managing Director of the REA, Abba Aliyu, said the Damau mini-grid underscores a shift in the agency’s rural electrification strategy, one that prioritizes community needs alongside power delivery.

According to him, the project demonstrates how decentralised renewable energy solutions can catalyse transformation in rural communities when energy access is deliberately integrated with social infrastructure.

Aliyu also stressed the importance of collaboration with subnational governments in scaling renewable energy deployment nationwide, while commending Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for his sustained support of REA initiatives tailored to the needs of local communities.

Also commenting, the Executive Director, Technical Services at the REA, Engr. Umar Abdullahi Umar, said the Damau project aligns with the agency’s newly unveiled harmonised technical standards and specifications for off-grid energy infrastructure.

He explained that the mini-grid reflects REA’s commitment to delivering reliable and fit-for-purpose renewable energy systems that translate electricity access into tangible social impact.

Umar added that the integration of power supply with essential services such as water infrastructure ensures sustainability and positions the community for future expansion.
