The Federal Government will today commission the first completed portion of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a major milestone in the execution of one of Nigeria’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, disclosed that 30 kilometres of the 750-kilometre highway under Phase I, Section I of the project has been completed and will be formally commissioned at Kilometre 8, located in the Jakande Estate area of Lagos.
The commissioning ceremony is expected to be attended by top government officials, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will participate virtually as he also inaugurates other completed projects under the Renewed Hope infrastructure agenda across Southern Nigeria.
Among the projects expected to be commissioned today are various roadworks spanning Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, and Enugu States. These include completed dual carriageways, road rehabilitation, and bridge reconstruction aimed at easing transportation challenges and boosting regional development.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media, Uchenna Orji, the Minister highlighted that toll collection on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will commence in December 2025. He described the road as a strategic link that will connect coastal communities across nine states, enhancing economic activity and national integration.
Umahi recalled that the highway was originally conceived 27 years ago by President Tinubu, who at the time envisioned a transport corridor that would open up the country’s coastline, promote unity, and stimulate inclusive development.
“This is not just a road project it is a national transformation initiative,” Umahi said. “Today, as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a dream conceived has become a dream actualized.”
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is part of the Renewed Hope Legacy Projects, which the Tinubu administration has prioritized to drive infrastructure-led growth and improve the overall quality of life for Nigerians.
