The Federal Government has commissioned an integrated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling station at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, intensifying its push to expand domestic gas utilization and accelerate Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy.
The new facility, located within the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, forms part of a broader federal strategy to strengthen gas infrastructure, reduce reliance on conventional fuels, and promote environmentally sustainable energy alternatives.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Executive Director of the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, Oluwole Adama, described the project as a decisive leap in Nigeria’s gas-powered energy transition. He stressed that the station represents more than a fuel outlet, but a strategic investment aligned with national energy priorities.
According to Adama, the integrated CNG facility symbolizes progress, partnership, and purpose in advancing cleaner fuels while deepening domestic gas consumption. He noted that expanding CNG infrastructure remains critical to cutting emissions, lowering energy costs, and unlocking value across the gas value chain.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, welcomed the development and commended the Federal Government for situating the project within the institution. He affirmed that the facility will not only serve the university community but also benefit residents in the surrounding areas.
Bamire further explained that the CNG station will stimulate research, practical training, and innovation in alternative energy solutions. He emphasized that students and researchers now have direct access to infrastructure that supports hands-on learning in clean energy technology and sustainable fuel systems.
Sources confirmed that the federal government-backed initiative aligns with ongoing national reforms aimed at boosting renewable energy adoption and reinforcing Nigeria’s shift toward cleaner fuel sources.
With the commissioning of the integrated CNG refueling station, the Federal Government has reinforced its commitment to building a resilient gas ecosystem while positioning institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University as active players in the country’s energy transition agenda.
