The Federal Government has disbursed ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to improve educational infrastructure and provide better teaching and learning facilities.

The Head of Media at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Efe Ovuakporie, announced the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.

She explained that the funding came under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund and covered 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education.

Universities received the largest share, with ₦28.5 billion allocated to them. Polytechnics received ₦5.8 billion, while colleges of education were allocated ₦4.7 billion.

According to Ovuakporie, the tertiary education funding also supports the implementation of agreed measures in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

She said the money would help beneficiary institutions begin or continue approved projects. These projects focus on critical infrastructure and other identified needs within the institutions.

The government expects the ₦38.93 billion education fund to help address long-standing infrastructure gaps and improve conditions for students and staff across the country.

Ovuakporie also stressed the importance of effective coordination between relevant government agencies and the beneficiary institutions. She said this would help ensure that the funding leads to practical improvements in educational facilities.

The ministry’s Head of Media further advised members of the public who want information about the beneficiary institutions and their respective allocations to visit the Federal Ministry of Finance’s website.

The disbursement forms part of efforts to strengthen public tertiary institutions and support agreed reforms in the education sector.

How can the Federal Government ensure that this funding delivers lasting improvements in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions?
