In anticipation of the festive season, the Ogun State Police Command issued a warning on Monday, cautioning against the use of fireworks and threatening severe consequences for any residents found in violation in the future. The police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, explained in a statement that the warning had become necessary due to numerous complaints from state residents, particularly those in Sagamu, Ikenne, Ijebu Ode, and Sango Ota, among other locations. These complaints indicated that the loud noise of fireworks, resembling gunfire, was disturbing their peace, causing anxiety, and raising security concerns.

While acknowledging that using fireworks is a deeply-rooted tradition and a customary part of end-of-year celebrations, the police emphasized that residents must abandon this practice as it currently exacerbates security issues in the state.

The statement read: “Since November 1, 2023, the Ogun State Police Command has received a surge in reports from residents in Sagamu, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, and Sango Ota, about the indiscriminate use of dangerous fireworks. The deafening noise generated by these fireworks threatens the tranquility of the state, causing anxiety among residents, particularly in light of existing security concerns expressed by the people of Ogun State.

Consequently, in response to these alarming reports, the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun, has imposed a ban on the indiscriminate use of explosive fireworks in Ogun State. This decision aligns with the distressing complaints from residents and the community, who have struggled to differentiate between gunshots and actual fireworks, causing sleepless nights and constant terror due to the thunderous blasts of these hazardous explosives.

The Ogun State Police Command acknowledges that fireworks displays hold deep cultural significance as an essential part of preparations for end-of-year celebrations. However, residents are urged to respect the privacy and peace of their neighbors. Considering the prevailing security situation, Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun, issues a strong warning to young individuals who may wish to defy this directive, emphasizing that doing so puts them at great risk. It is important to note that the use of ‘banga’ has been criminalized, and deliberate violations will be met with punitive measures in accordance with the law.”
