At Yelwata in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area, suspected herdsmen slaughtered no less than five persons.
The event occurred on Wednesday about 1:00 pm, according to the local who only gave his name as Iorhemen.
Iorhemen claimed that on Wednesday, the alleged herders broke into the neighborhood and opened fire on residents who were on their farms.
Six other people were hurt during the attack, according to him.
He said: “The attackers were herders; they entered the community (Yelwata) at around 1 pm today (Wednesday), and they used pistols and machetes to attack several residents who were working on their farm.
“As soon as they caused damage, they rushed for cover in the bush. Some of the injured ran into the neighborhood to alert us.
The head of the local government, Mike Uba, confirmed the incident by saying there were five fatalities and four injuries through the council’s security adviser, Waku Christopher.
Five farmers were attacked in their farms, killed, and three to four more were injured, he claimed, adding that it was true that the same herdsmen and farmers were responsible.
Officers had been sent to the neighborhood, according to SP Catherine Anene, spokesman for State Command, who confirmed the event.
“Attack in Yelwata community is confirmed,” she stated. Police personnel who were sent to the operation are still there. Please wait until the procedure is finished before revealing any information.
