The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that five out of the 12 inmates who escaped from the Koton-Karfe Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kogi State have been recaptured, with security forces continuing the search for the remaining fugitives.

In a statement issued on Monday, NCoS spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, detailed how the escape occurred, revealing that inmates in one section of the facility tampered with the padlocks, allowing 12 individuals to flee.

“During the unfortunate incident, some inmates manipulated the padlocks, leading to the escape of 12 prisoners,” the statement read.

Upon learning of the jailbreak, Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, in collaboration with security agencies and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Kogi State, swiftly mobilized personnel to secure the facility, restore order, and launch a manhunt for the escapees.
