Babatunji Wusu –
The release of five prisoners from the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has reportedly been arranged by renowned Yoruba monarch Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, and his spouse.
The Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command spokesperson, Adamu Duza, issued a statement in which Ogunwusi said that the inmates’ fee payments were a way for him to honor his eighth year on the throne of his forefathers.
During the intervention program, the convener of the Hope Alive Initiative for Africa is reported to have told the prisoners, “I am here for the real people who need hope.” Your current state will become history by tomorrow.
The statement went on to say that the monarch had offered to provide equipment to help the prisoners acquire new skills as part of their rehabilitation after “securing the release of five inmates by paying their fines.”
Temitope, the wife of the monarch, stated earlier that in addition to commemorating the traditional ruler’s reign, the event was also an opportunity to consider social concerns.
Ooni of Ife’s sixth wife is Temitope. Last year, he wed the princess of Ijebu.
The PUNCH cited Temitope as saying, “We are reminded of the power of forgiveness, redemption, and second chance,” during their intervention at the Kuje jail.
The spouse of the king commended the efforts of Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, and the correctional service officials in rehabilitating and reintegrating prisoners.
The king and his spouse were thanked by Olatunbosun Ajibogun, on behalf of Ibrahim Idris, Controller of Corrections FCT Command, for choosing the Kuje Custodial Center.
He gave them his word that the correctional service would never waver in its commitment to helping prisoners change, get well, and reintegrate into society.
