By Eppe Franklyne – Joao Fonseca produced the biggest win of his young career on Friday, defeating Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-set battle at the French Open and ending the Serbian star’s latest quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title.

The 19-year-old Brazilian battled back from two sets down to secure a remarkable 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory in a contest that lasted just under five hours. The result not only ended Djokovic’s campaign in Paris but also made Fonseca the first teenager to beat the tennis legend in a Grand Slam match.

Reflecting on the memorable triumph, Fonseca said: “I actually didn’t believe I could win the match, I just played and enjoyed being ‌on the court. What an idol we have and what a pleasure it was to ‌step on the court against him, so I thank him. I’m very happy.”

The French Open upset further opened up the tournament draw following the surprise exit of World No. 1 Jannik Sinner a day earlier. With defending champion Carlos Alcaraz absent due to a wrist injury, Roland Garros is now guaranteed to crown a first-time major champion.

Djokovic, who recently celebrated his 39th birthday, looked in complete control early on. The third seed dominated the opening stages with a blend of powerful groundstrokes, delicate drop shots and precise shot-making to take a two-set lead.

However, Joao Fonseca refused to back down. He raised his intensity in the third set and continued to pressure Djokovic with fearless attacking tennis. After levelling the match, the Brazilian recovered from a 1-3 deficit in the deciding set before breaking serve at a crucial moment and sealing victory with three consecutive aces.

“I just believed that I could do the aces, it was crazy,” Fonseca said. “I have never done that before. I’m super happy that I could finish like this. “I felt like John Isner.”

The Joao Fonseca story continues on Sunday when he faces either Tommy Paul or Casper Ruud in the next round.
