After a four-year hiatus, Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said it was a “magnificent feeling” to win his first La Liga championship as manager of the team where he won eight titles as a player.
After beating local rivals Espanyol 4-2 on Sunday, Xavi’s team won the championship. Robert Lewandowski scored twice in the first half to help his team to the victory.
Barcelona’s most recent La Liga championship came during the 2018–19 campaign, when club legends Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez led the team’s offense.
However, since the club had a severe financial problem, both were forced to leave, and the team’s performance suffered.
But less than two years after his return to the club to take over for Ronald Koeman in November 2021, Xavi has led it back to the top, and he has stated that winning the title is essential for its future.
“After more than ten months of labor and sacrifice, we are left with a great sensation. It’s been a remarkable work,” Xavi said to Movistar Plus.
“Winning was essential for the project’s stability for the supporters and the club; we must keep going in this direction.
Although we still have the unfinished task of competing in Europe, this League shows that we are doing things extremely well and offers us security.
For the past three years, Barcelona has not advanced past the round of 16 in the Champions League.
Barcelona enjoyed a successful period from 2005 to 19 during which the team won 10 La Liga championships and four Champions League trophies, but since winning the competition in 2014–15, the club has only once advanced to the competition’s semifinals.
However, it has had a standout domestic season this year, defeating fierce rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final and winning La Liga with four games remaining.
Xavi acknowledged feeling the burden and expressed gratitude for his family’s support.
