Sweden, which abandoned two centuries of military non-alignment to seek NATO membership last year, stated earlier this month that it is prepared to host NATO troops and equipment even before it becomes a member of the alliance.
According to the military, two American B-1B Lancers landed at Lulea-Kallax airfield in northern Sweden on Monday, June 19.
“We are carrying out a joint exercise, both the air force and the army, with the Bomber Task Force,” air force spokeswoman Louise Levin told AFP.
She did not specify the duration of the exercises.
According to the military, “for the first time in modern times, US bomber planes have landed in Sweden.”
“It is critical to have strong partners in these uncertain times and while waiting for NATO membership.”
Sweden has been a NATO “invitee” since June 2022, but Turkey and Hungary have stalled its membership bid, which must be ratified by all 31 member states.
NATO’s Article 5 collective defense clause, which states that an assault on one member is considered an attack on all, applies only to full members.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced the decision to host NATO troops and equipment prior to joining, stating that their presence would operate as a deterrence against any potential Russian attacks from across the Baltic Sea.
“The choice strengthens Sweden’s defense and sends a clear message to Russia,”First time ever that US warplanes have landed in Sweden for training
