Police in Ogun State have detained two accused internet scammers, known as Yahoo guys, and two suspected female accomplices for allegedly kidnapping another accomplice.
The suspects allegedly kidnapped the accomplice for denying them their share of the proceeds of a N26 million fraud scheme.
The police apprehended them on Monday.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state police spokesperson, said in a press statement that the suspects were apprehended at Orile Imo village in the state’s Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.
Agbe Simeon, Messiah Nicky, Oladapo Dolapo, and Yetunde Shonola were mentioned as suspects by Mr Oyeyemi.
Mr. Oyeyemi stated that the police discovered one Haruna Usman, who was kidnapped on December 22, in the suspects’ hideout in Orile, Imo.
“The DPO of Owode Egba division, Popoola Olasunkanmi, had promptly deployed his men to the location, where the four abductors were captured while two others fled,” according to the report.
Mr. Oyeyemi stated that the alleged fraudsters recently defrauded an unknown person out of N26.4 million.
“However, the victim only delivered N2,200 to his other coworkers, alleging that the money had not been paid in full by their client.”
According to Mr. Oyeyemi, the development enraged his coworkers, who took him to a herbalist in Orile, Imo, and held him prisoner for a week.
“They had threatened to kill him there if he did not give them their full part of the proceeds of the swindle.”
Meanwhile, Lanre Bankole, the Commissioner of Police, has directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, CIID, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
