The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Cross River State, Innocent Tommy Etuk, has issued a strong warning to motorists—especially commercial drivers—to avoid reckless driving and strictly adhere to traffic regulations.
Etuk gave the caution during a sensitisation campaign held across motor parks in the state, as travel activities begin to surge ahead of the Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
He urged drivers to make safety their top priority, emphasizing that human life is priceless and cannot be replaced.
“There is no supermarket where human life or body parts can be bought and replaced,” he warned.
As part of the safety campaign, FRSC officials carried out alcohol tests on drivers before departure, stressing that anyone found above the legal limit would not be allowed to travel.
“In such cases, passengers will be transferred to another vehicle to ensure their safety,” Etuk explained, noting that alcohol significantly impairs judgment and increases the likelihood of road crashes.
The FRSC boss also cautioned against overloading, describing it as a major contributor to road accidents. He revealed that special patrol teams have been deployed across the state to enforce compliance and apprehend violators.
He further called on passengers to take an active role in ensuring their safety by speaking up against dangerous driving and reporting erring drivers through designated emergency lines.
“Passengers must remain alert. If a driver is overspeeding or driving dangerously, caution him or report appropriately,” he said.
Reacting to the campaign, a driver, Usen Bassey, noted that continuous sensitisation would help reduce road accidents but urged the government to also address the issue of poor road conditions.
