Dr. Idara Bassey, a Lagos-based medical doctor, has been apprehended by the Nigerian police in connection with the death of 36-year-old Abiola during a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery. The incident occurred at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1 on August 26, 2024.

Abiola, who underwent the BBL procedure—a cosmetic surgery designed to enhance the buttocks by transferring fat from other parts of the body—tragically died as a result of the surgery. After the procedure, Abiola lost consciousness and began gasping for breath. Her driver rushed her to another hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Dr. Bassey initially fled the scene following the incident but was later apprehended. He is currently being held for investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti.

The arrest was confirmed by Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer. According to the police, the incident was reported by Abiola’s driver at the Maroko Police Division. Upon investigating the clinic, police discovered that Abiola had been administered an injection by a nurse under the clinic owner’s direction, which was followed by her sudden medical decline.

Police detectives have visited the scene, collected evidence, and conducted a preliminary inspection. Abiola’s body has been taken to a morgue for autopsy, and the investigation into the cause of her death continues.
