Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has strongly condemned unethical practices among university lecturers. He denounced the coercion of students into purchasing handouts, paying bribes to pass courses (“sorting”), and being charged exorbitantly for additional academic services.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar on Sunday, the former Senate Majority Leader reaffirmed his commitment to upholding academic integrity. He recalled his tenure as Pro-Chancellor at Federal University Lokoja, where he dismissed six professors for sexual harassment. Though the incidents occurred before his arrival, he ensured due process was followed to hold the perpetrators accountable.

Ndoma-Egba expressed deep concern over the declining academic standards in Nigeria, particularly the rise of “miracle centers” where students obtain unearned grades. He stressed that such practices undermine the credibility of Nigerian university certificates.

He highlighted FUOYE’s success in maintaining an uninterrupted academic calendar despite challenges such as COVID-19 and the prolonged ASUU strike. This consistency, he noted, has made FUOYE the most sought-after university according to JAMB.

Addressing the sexual harassment allegations against FUOYE’s Vice-Chancellor, Ndoma-Egba emphasized his firm stance against misconduct. A committee has been set up to investigate the matter, and he assured that an emergency meeting would soon be convened to finalize the report. He expressed urgency in resolving the issue to prevent it from overshadowing the university’s achievements.
