Cody Gakpo’s brace helped Liverpool continue their pursuit of the Premier League title with a commanding 4-1 victory over Ipswich at Anfield on Saturday. Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah also got on the scoresheet, ensuring the Reds stayed six points clear of Arsenal, with a game in hand. This dominant performance has made Liverpool’s second league title in 35 years and their 20th overall seem increasingly inevitable under the management of Arne Slot in his first season.
Slot made five changes from Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Lille, while also securing a spot in the Champions League’s last 16. Ipswich, however, continues to struggle in the Premier League following back-to-back promotions. The team suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat to Manchester City the previous weekend and were thoroughly outplayed at Anfield.
Szoboszlai was one of the standout players, opening the scoring with a brilliant low strike for his fourth goal of the season. Salah, having recently missed opportunities to surpass Thierry Henry as the Premier League’s seventh-highest scorer, netted his 19th goal of the season with a powerful shot from Gakpo’s cross. That strike took Salah two goals clear of Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak in the Golden Boot race.
The third goal came when Gakpo pounced on a rebound following a save from Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton, after Szoboszlai’s initial attempt. Gakpo then added a header off a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross for his 14th goal of the season, sealing the dominant win.
Ipswich did manage a late consolation when Jacob Greaves headed in from a Julio Enciso corner. Despite the result, Ipswich’s focus will shift to next weekend’s crucial clash against bottom-of-the-table Southampton, as they continue to battle for survival in the Premier League.
