The recently enacted Kano Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Bill 2022 has received the approval of Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

On Tuesday, during the State Executive Council’s weekly meeting at Kano’s Government House, the bill was officially signed into law.

After the bill was signed into law, Ganduje spoke and said that it would open the door for the inclusion and advancement of individuals with disabilities in the state.

He emphasized that the law called for the creation of a ministry to manage PWD affairs, adding that the ministry would be run with representation from each of the six clusters of disabilities.

The governor insisted that the ministry would receive all the help it would need to be operational in accordance with international standards once it was constituted.

He claimed that some disabled persons had been chosen to receive business training at the Dangote Skills Acquisition Centre in Kano in order to increase their independence and lower unemployment.

But according to the governor, the state has outlawed street begging and has formed a commission to remove beggars from every nook and cranny of the state.

The PWDs Amendment Law 2022 was approved by the House of Assembly on November 16, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

In addition to allocating 2% of all job openings to the six clusters, which include the physically and visually handicapped, the new law calls for the creation of a ministry to manage PWD matters.

Lepers, people with down syndrome, those with hearing or speech impairments, spinal cord injury sufferers, and others are also included.

Additionally, the law permits the reserving of particular parking places and areas in public facilities for people with impairments.
