Defending champion Coco Gauff moved safely into the third round of the French Open after defeating Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday in Paris.
Although the American star secured a straight-sets victory, the match proved more difficult than the scoreline suggested. Sherif challenged Gauff with clever tactics and long rallies, especially during a competitive first set.
“It was a physical tough match. I was really tested today,” Coco Gauff said after the win. “I will be focusing on getting more my rhythm back because I did not have it today.”
Sherif attempted to disrupt Gauff’s rhythm early in the match with high looping shots, but the defending champion quickly settled and raced into a 3-0 lead. The Egyptian later fought back strongly and recovered a break while pushing Gauff through a demanding sixth game that lasted more than 13 minutes.
Despite the pressure, Coco Gauff stayed calm and regained control at crucial moments. She eventually secured the first set with an ace after more than one hour of play.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with both players exchanging early breaks. Sherif briefly levelled at 2-2 and celebrated passionately, hoping to become the first Egyptian woman in the Open era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.
However, Gauff raised her level once again and broke serve to move ahead before closing out the victory after one hour and 50 minutes.
The American star will now face either Britain’s Katie Boulter or Austria’s Anastasia Potapova as she continues her bid to retain the French Open title.
Can Coco Gauff successfully defend her French Open crown this year?
