Throughout the second half, Germany sought the game-winning goal. In the 57th minute, VAR overruled Popp’s goal that would have given the Germans the victory. A few minutes later, Popp nearly scored with another header, but the crossbar stopped him.
In the eleventh and twelfth minutes of stoppage time, Sydney Lohmann had two chances to score for Germany, but both of her attempts were wide and high.
For the first time in nine Women’s World Cup participation, Germany, the second-ranked team in the world, was unable to proceed past the group stage.
With just one point, South Korea placed last in the group but may be proud of holding the defending champions to a draw.
Germany and South Korea will both be returning home after finishing third and fourth in their respective groups.
