Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has successfully secured the release of 30 inmates from five correctional centres across Nigeria. A statement from Alhassan Mamudo, spokesman for the state Ministry of Justice, confirmed the development on Monday in Damaturu.

According to Mamudo, Governor Buni paid the fines for 14 of the inmates, while 16 others were granted clemency following a thorough evaluation. The inmates were released from correctional facilities in Potiskum, Nguru, Gashua, Jos, and Kaduna.

This decision was made after recommendations from Yobe’s Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, which is chaired by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Saleh Samanja. The council visited the correctional facilities in Potiskum, Nguru, and Gashua to assess eligible inmates for clemency. After careful deliberations, a list of 30 inmates was presented to Governor Buni for approval.

Governor Buni reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of inmates, as well as providing opportunities for skill acquisition programs under his leadership.
