The grandmother of Nigeria’s Victor Boniface has stated that she never thought the striker for the Super Eagles would become as successful as he is now.
In the summer of 2023, Victor Boniface, who began his football career in the Nigerian state of Ondo, joined Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga.
The 23-year-old Boniface stunned everyone by becoming as one of the most lethal strikers in Germany and at the club in just his rookie campaign.
He missed around three months of play due to fitness concerns, yet he has remained Bayer Leverkusen’s top scorer thus far this season.
With eight assists and 11 league goals (18 goals overall), Boniface is now leading the German Bundesliga in goals scored, which helped Leverkusen win the league for the first time ever.
Victor Boniface brought his grandma to watch him play earlier in the season; the elderly woman was in the stands when the 23-year-old striker delighted the crowd with a goal. Because of Boniface’s great performance in the game, the fans at the BayArena yelled his name in front of his delighted grandmother.
“I thank God because it’s not by my power. I didn’t think something like this would happen in my lifetime. Going to Germany to watch him live and to have heard thousands of people also shout his name inside the stadium makes me really proud,” Boniface’s grandma told Punch.
On the game on Sunday, April 14, in which Victor Boniface scored a goal in the 5-0 win over Werder Bremen that won Bayer Leverkusen the league title, the player’s grandma admitted that he couldn’t watch it.
“I could not watch the match but my happiness knows no bounds regardless. So many people have been calling to congratulate me as well”, she said.
