A coalition of Nigerian youth, student, and civil society groups has called for the immediate dismissal of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of allowing police brutality under his leadership.
The demand comes after Peace Corps of Nigeria Commandant Dickson Akoh and 16 officers were reportedly arrested and mistreated by armed police over a tenancy dispute. Officers allegedly stormed the Peace Corps headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, damaging property and forcibly detaining Akoh and his personnel.
Coalition leaders, including Blessing Akinlosotu and former National Youth Council President Murtala Mohammed, issued an ultimatum for the IGP to release Akoh and apologize to the Peace Corps. They warned of a planned peaceful protest at the National Assembly if their demands are not met by October 28, 2024.
The group further called for the unsealing of the Peace Corps headquarters, which was reportedly shut down after the arrests, to allow the organization to resume its activities.
