Hon. Adetola Kafilat Ogbara, Member representing Kosofe Federal Constituency of Lagos State, has commended the Managing Director/CEO of the Tafawa Balewa Square Management Board, Lucia Cobbina Shittu, for her creative vision and reform-driven leadership at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).
Speaking during an interview following a presentation by the TBS management, Hon. Ogbara described Mrs. Shittu’s leadership as innovative and forward-thinking, noting that her ideas could reposition TBS to international standards if given adequate federal backing.
“From her presentation, it is clear she has introduced creative initiatives and a new ideology. If she is given the right support and budget approval, she can transform TBS beyond our imagination,” Ogbara said.
The lawmaker also appealed to Nigerians occupying shops and spaces within the complex to cooperate with the new management direction, stressing that resistance and litigation over restructuring plans would not serve the country’s broader interest.
She emphasized the need for collective effort to move Nigeria toward sustainable development.
Mrs. Shittu, in her remarks, highlighted the operational benefits of the facility’s upgrade from Bad B to Band A electricity supply, noting that TBS operates 24/7 and requires consistent power.
The facility currently houses about 400 tenants and boasts a 36,000-square-meter arena capable of hosting major international events.
She referenced the recent homecoming concert by Wizkid, which reportedly attracted over 56,000 attendees, as proof of TBS’s massive potential.
The TBS MD called on the Federal Government to support the rehabilitation of the facility, describing it as a national monument and strategic tourism asset.
Management has already rehabilitated the Independence Arcade into what is now known as the Independence Garden, aimed at boosting tourism and international patronage. Plans are also underway to expand the space into a fully family-friendly recreational park.
“There is so much potential in this national asset. With proper rehabilitation and government support, TBS can become a global-standard facility,” Shittu stated.
Both leaders expressed optimism that with improved funding and collaboration, Tafawa Balewa Square can become a premier destination for entertainment, tourism, and national events.
