The lynching of a navy officer assigned to the Imeri navy College close to Idoani in the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday has resulted in the arrest of three suspects who have since described the terrible events that led up to the crime.
The three suspects—Johnson Adeleke, 20, Francis Shagari, 17, and Sambo Ayomide, 20—spoke on Thursday while they were being paraded by the police in Akure, the state’s capital. According to the police, three additional suspects in the event are still at large.
The three suspects were apprehended while attempting to depart Idoani, according to Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the state’s police spokeswoman.
Mr. Sambo claimed in a press conference that a brief skirmish on the highway caused the tragedy.
Mr. Sambo claimed that during the dispute, the officer, M. Akingbohun, had struck his companion in the face, but that bystanders had intervened to settle the conflict before they left the area.
He claimed that immediately after they had left the scene, Mr. Adeleke, one of the suspects, had a suspicion that the person who had reportedly slapped him might have been a false military official, so they had decided to track him down to find out who he was.
He claimed that they rode a motorcycle to the town where they eventually located the cop.
According to Mr. Sambo, they attacked the officer right afterwards and severely beat him before leaving him for dead. Later, a medical facility confirmed the victim’s death.
A co-suspect named Mr. Adeleke claimed that Femi was the person who afterwards sent an SMS informing them that the cop had passed away.
In order to decide what to do next, the three of them, according to him, decided to meet in a local school. However, a few members of the military and police quickly arrived at the school.
The other two escaped and weren’t found until after Mr. Sambo was taken into custody within the school.
The accused, according to Mrs. Odunlami-Omisanya, were taken into custody by the police and the military.
She stated that the accused would be charged after being arraigned in court.
We are searching for the evading motorbike rider who drove the accused to the location of the deceased navy officer’s attack, she continued.
