Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, representing Cross River North Senatorial District, has ruled out the possibility of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite ongoing defections that have rocked the party in recent months.

Addressing members of the Cross River State Journalists Forum (CROSSJOF) at his Abuja residence, Senator Jarigbe emphasized that his political decisions are rooted in the will of his constituents, who remain steadfast PDP supporters.

“Our politics is local. If I go home and tell my people I’m defecting, they’ll say, ‘Go ahead, but we’re not following you,’” he said. “My people want to remain in the PDP, and I will stay with them. It’s not about fighting anyone—it’s about respecting the wishes of my senatorial district.”

While he refrained from criticizing politicians who have switched parties, he noted that such decisions may reflect the sentiments of their local communities.

Despite his party’s opposition status in Cross River, Jarigbe called on his constituents to cooperate with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state government, stressing the importance of unity in development efforts.

“We must avoid distractions and support the state government so that governance reaches the grassroots,” he said.

The senator also renewed calls for the creation of Ogoja State, arguing that it is the only former province in Nigeria yet to be granted statehood.

“If there’s one state that deserves to be created in Nigeria, it’s Ogoja. I believe Mr. President will listen to us. Creating a state during a democratic dispensation would be historic,” he added.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas, Jarigbe highlighted his developmental strides in Cross River North, listing infrastructure projects such as roads, water supply, school blocks, and electrification in every ward of his district.

He specifically cited the rehabilitation of the Boki-Abakpa road, a long-neglected route now made motorable through his efforts.

On education and youth empowerment, the senator noted ongoing scholarships and bursary programs, with some students already studying abroad through NDDC and PTDF schemes.

In the legislative arena, Jarigbe disclosed progress on several bills, including one for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre, which has passed its second reading and a public hearing.

“We’re awaiting the third reading before it’s sent to the President for assent,” he said, while lamenting that earlier proposals to establish a Federal University of Technology and a Federal Polytechnic in Ogoja were declined, possibly due to political positioning.

Senator Jarigbe concluded by reaffirming his dedication to his senatorial district, pledging to continue serving with integrity and focus despite political headwinds.

“I’m focused on delivering infrastructure and promoting human capital development. I remain committed to fulfilling my social contract with the people of Cross River North.”
