Pastor Tunde Bakare, a well-known cleric-turned-politician, has declared he will not refer to President-elect Bola Tinubu as “my president” even though he will be inaugurated on Monday, May 29.
This was stated on Saturday during a virtual program titled “Building the New Nigeria: The Role of the Diaspora” that was put on by the PTB4Nigeria In Diaspora Group. The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church (formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly) made the statement.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), according to Bakare, presided over shoddy elections in 2023.
He laughed and responded that he would reiterate what he stated to President Muhammadu Buhari last week when asked if he would be pleased to serve for the incoming government as a Minister of Diaspora Engagements during the Zoom meeting, which had over 200 attendees.
According to Bakare, he told Buhari that he sometimes referred to him as the president of Nigeria and other times as “My President.”
“Last Wednesday, I was at the Glass House where he (Buhari) has been restricted now that the main house is being renovated,” the clergyman remarked. I claimed to have fulfilled your request. I want you to be aware of this because you came to power on the wings of integrity and incorruptibility, but you’re now handing that power over to someone who lacks those qualities.
In a statement, Bakare said, “Any public lecture anywhere, before this mess is cleared off, I will address Asiwaju (Tinubu) as a President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but I will never call him my president.”
The priest claimed that since he did not vote in the elections, no one could claim that he lost, despite selecting the APC presidential candidacy form but receiving zero votes in the primary elections.
He declared, “There is no guilt in what we have done. I took part in the primary, and hundreds of people took part simply by stepping down. We confronted authorities with the truth.
He claimed, “I wasn’t there when they cast their ballots, I wasn’t there when they gave (me) zero, but we won that badge of zero and badge of honor,” adding that some losses were more triumphant than wins.
