IG Deploys Special Anti-Bandit Squads Nationwide Amid Surge in Killings

In response to the alarming surge in nationwide violence, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the immediate deployment of special anti-bandit squads across the country. This decisive action follows a series of deadly attacks that left at least 21 people dead in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto states within just a few days.

During a high level meeting with Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Commanders in Abuja, the IG ordered each squadron to maintain a fully equipped, combat-ready unit on permanent standby. These units are to provide rapid response support to state commands during crises and high-risk operations.

“The PMF must reclaim its identity as a swift and decisive strike force,” Egbetokun emphasized. “All PMF squadrons are to deploy one unit for quarterly training, focusing on both tactical proficiency and the ethics of responsible policing.”

In Kwara State, gunmen attacked a motor park in Ilesha Baruba, killing six civilians and wounding others. A vigilante was also murdered in a separate attack near Kainji National Park. Police have since arrested an informant linked to a bandit group, and three attackers were reportedly injured in a shootout.

In Benue, a bandit known locally as “Government” went on a shooting spree in Afia community, reportedly killing 11. The State Information Commissioner confirmed the attacker as a known criminal, while residents suspect mental instability.

Sokoto State saw fresh violence as the Lakurawa terror group raided multiple villages, killing at least three people and looting livestock. The group also mounted roadblocks and attacked traders along a major route.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, on a condolence visit to Benue, described the country’s insecurity as “pure criminality,” disassociated from politics or religion, and vowed the government’s continued effort in reversing the crisis.

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue attributed the violence to foreign elements, claiming the attackers speak unfamiliar dialects and bear no resemblance to local tribes.

In Katsina, the state government disclosed spending over N36.8 billion to bolster security, including equipping the new Community Watch Corps with armoured vehicles, surveillance drones, and tactical gear. Over 2,000 victims of banditry have received assistance, officials said.

Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa also confirmed the deployment of 115 soldiers to the Akoko area and promised further expansion of the Amotekun Corps.

Meanwhile, the Northern States Governors’ Forum, led by Gombe Governor Inuwa Yahaya, has launched a joint security initiative aimed at restoring regional peace through intelligence sharing and coordinated action.
